Vasco X Spurs - McDonald´s Championship 1999

basketball videos No Comments

Infelizmente no 4° quarto o time sucumbe…

What is the McDonald´s Championship?
The McDonald’s Championship was established in 1987 as a joint effort between the NBA and FIBA to promote the sport of basketball globally.
It has evolved into a global championship for the best club teams in the world.
Other NBA winners of the event were the Milwaukee Bucks (1987), Boston Celtics (1988), Denver Nuggets (1989), the New York Knicks (1990), Los Angeles Lakers (1991), the Phoenix Suns (1993), Houston (1995) and Chicago Bulls (1999)

Equipes participantes - 1999:
Adelaide 36ers - Campeão da Oceania
E.C. Sagesse - Campeão Asiático
Varese Roosters - Campeão Italiano
Zalgiris Kaunas - Campeão da EuroLiga
Vasco da Gama - Campeão da Liga Sulamericana
San Antonio Spurs - Campeão da NBA

Duncan had 20 of his points in the first half when the Spurs built a 56-36 lead. After having their lead cut to 79-66, the Spurs outscored the Brazilian team, 24-2 in the fourth quarter.
Charles Edward Byrd led Vasco da Gama with 17 points. The Brazilian team reached the finals with a 92-86 overtime win over Zalgiris Kaunas of Lithuania, which represented the EuroLeague.
By winning the NBA Finals in June, the Spurs received a bye into the semifinals of this six-team tourney.

Read the rest of this entry »

Vasco X Zalgiris - Semifinal McDonald´s Championship 1999

basketball videos No Comments

MILAN, October 15 — In the most exciting game thus far in the McDonald’s Championship, South American Club League champion Vasco Da Gama overcame a 10-point deficit after three quarters, and came back to defeat Zalgiris Kaunas of Lithuania, the defending European champion. It was a huge victory for the Brazilian team. The European champion is generally regarded as the best non-NBA team in the world.

Vasco Da Game was led by Jose Vargas, who went to LSU and Rogerio Klafke, who has struggled during his career to live up to the billing as the “next Oscar Schmidt,” Brazil’s legendary Olympian. The two players combined for only 10 points in the first half as their team seemed outclassed. But in the fourth quarter and overtime periods, each scored 15 points. Klafke ended the game with 21 points and Vargas, who fouled out in overtime, had 19. Charles Byrd, who had 31 in Vasco’s victory over Adelaide on Thursday, added 18 points.
Vargas got his team moving early in the fourth quarter when he scored five consecutive points. The Brazilians continued getting closer, and then with one minute left, Vargas scored a three-point play after being fouled on an inside shot. After Kaunas regained the lead, Klafke nailed a three to put Vasco up by two, 76-74, with 30 seconds left.

Kaunas quickly tied the game on a driving layup through a soft Vasco defense by Mindaugas Zukauskas, but no one could score in the final 24 seconds of regulation.

Vasco took control of the game in the overtime, scoring the first four points and eventually leading by five points on two occasions. When Kaunas closed to within one, Klafke did a very nice Oscar imitation, hitting another three point shot with 1:37 left to ice the victory.

With the victory, Vasco advances to the McDonald’s Championship finals. But regardless of what happens, Friday will be remembered as a proud day in their basketball history.

Postgame Quotes:
ZALGIRIS:
Q: After sending the game into overtime, did you expect your team to respond to that second chance?
Coach Kazlauskas: Basketball is such a sport where you need to play to the end of the game. So it was not the key moment in the game because we had given up more points (easy baskets) earlier in the game.
Q: How disappointed are you that you do not get a possible matchup against the Spurs?
Corey Beck: Oh yes. It was going to be like a dream game to me. I wanted this game so bad. It hurts for me playing in the league for the last few years and getting a chance to play against the championship team.
This team here, I look to myself as being a leader of this team and I wanted to come out and show America that we are capable of hanging around with the Spurs. I was really looking forward to playing those guys, but all those dreams are gone now.

VASCO:
Coach Melendez: I want to dedicate this victory to the basketball from Brazil and Puerto Rico. This was a win for both countries. Again, we played very good on defense. It is a great victory to prove to people that South America has good basketball. I want to thank also all my players. They have worked really hard and they deserved this victory.

Rogério Klafke: For me, I think, the word of the game is defense. We are not playing well the first half, but the second half we came back. It was very difficult emotionally. The ball wasn’t going in from the outside, but then we came back and defended well. We have worked hard, especially on defense. We have shown ourselves to the best team from Europe that we are a great team. I am especially happy that we can show good basketball from South America. A lot of people think basketball isn’t very strong. We deserve to be here, especially because we have played very well. Read the rest of this entry »

Vasco X Adelaide 36ers - Game 1 McDonald´s Championship 1999

basketball videos No Comments

about the game:
MILAN, Oct. 14 — Size does matter. The Adelaide 36ers, champions of the National Basketball League in Australia, are latest to discover that.
Playing against Vasco da Gama, the 1999 South American Club League champions, the 36ers were unable to effectively match up with a taller and heavier opponent, and Vasco muscled its way to a 90-79 victory in the first game of the McDonald’s Championship.
The victory enabled the Brazilians to advance to the second round of the tournament. They will play Zalgiris Kaunas, the reigning European champions, on Friday night at the FilaForum in Milan.

Vasco da Gama used its inside strength to its advantage, particularly on defense where its bulk prevented the Australians from penetrating the lane and getting easy shots. The 36ers managed to get as many rebounds as Vasco — 35 each — but they did not get inside very often, which led to a 39.5 percent performance from the field.
On offense, however, Vasco was led by its smallest player, 6-foot-1 Charles Byrd, an American who played at West Texas State University. The 33-year old guard, who has also played in Spain, was a pest throughout the game. Byrd had 31 points while also adding seven assists and six rebounds as he effectively battled on the inside.
Guard Brent Maher, who is widely regarded as the best player Down Under, led Australia. Maher, who has drawn some interest from NBA teams, had 19 points and consistently demonstrated the ability to create his own shot.

Postgame Quotes:
Vasco da Gama
Coach Flor Melendez:
We played a great first half. We got the job done on defense. We studied Adelaide and knew how to stop their game. Offensively, our three scorers functioned well: Byrd, Vargas and Rogerio (Klafke). We had some problems in the second half, especially with the ballhandling because it is tough to get adapted to the 24-second clock. In summary, we played a great game. My players gave their best and we are very, very happy.

Adelaide 36ers
Coach Phil Smyth:
From our point of view, we got off to a slow start. We had some excellent opportunities, which we didn’t take advantage of. For whatever reason, we were out of sync. Once we got in the game, we were pretty competitive. We gave them a lead, but we came back a couple of times. But Charles Byrd’s three-pointer at the end of the third quarter probably summed up the game for us. I thought we hung in there the best we could.

Darnell Mee: I agree with Phil. We got off to a slow start. It took a while before we adjusted to how the refs were calling the game. We gave them a lead and when Byrd hit that three-pointer at the end of the third, it put us in a hole that was tough to come back from.

Mark Davis: All credit to Vasco da Gama, I thought they played very well today. Like Phil and Darnell said, we got off to a slow start. We had to play catch-up basketball the rest of the game. On this night, Vasco da Gama played better. That happens. We have to rectify the situation the next time we play. Read the rest of this entry »
